The location of these beautiful galveton lofts are at 2208 Postoffice, Galveston Texas 77550. The lofts are located in Historic Downtown Galveston. While most of our Galveston lofts are for sale, leasing is available on some select lofts.
Originally constructed in the early 1920s by Clark Thompson, the building housed Mr. Thompson’s dry goods store for almost 30 years. Mr. Thompson was a prominent businessman in the community and was the son-in-law of Col. W.L. Moody, he later served in the House of Representatives for over 25 years.
The building was known by many in the local community as the home of the J.C. Penny Co. until the early 70’s. The building stood vacant for a short period and was purchased by Mr. Jim Earthman in the mid 80’s. Mr. Earthman and his wife were avid purveyors of arts and antiquities and had an antique shop in the Eiband’s building across the street, they opened the 2208 Postoffice building to local artists.
In 2006 the building was purchased by Rusty Walla, a developer with interests in both Houston and Galveston. Mr. Walla’s goal was to keep the art deco characteristics of the building that were in the fore front of design in Mr.Thompson’s era. By adding something new and keeping the old, 2208 Postoffice has become one of the great “Recycled” buildings on Postoffice Street. It’s rich history and unique architecture make a beautiful backdrop for the newly opened lofts on a truly magical street.
The twenty three custom built lofts feature a grand entrance with a marble staircase that flows into the expansive art gallery atrium with bamboo flooring. The open atrium soars over 50 breath taking feet to a vaulted ceiling with skylights. The lofts showcase granite countertops, stainless steel appliance packages, bamboo and hardwood flooring. Ceiling heights range from 9ft to 15 ft. with the original brick exposed in many.
